LOL Poor Pumpkin(this is your nickname, rawr!). One I can think of is maybe Maka Albarn from Soul Eater. :O Reason being is that while she is a tom boy, she is not merely a dude in a girl's body. She has her moments where I, myself, can see she is in fact a teenage girl. And while she does have some fanservice moments(more so in the manga), it doesn't make up her whole character. IDK, anybody else agree? I kind of agree Maka is well written, but honestly I have to point to my favourite manga for well written women - FullMetal Alchemist. All the women here are tough and strong in different ways but are written as characters first and women second. Probably because a woman wrote it. Red Garden, which I recently finished watching, had great female characters. Puella Magi Madoka Magica had pretty well written characters in it. I' sure I could think of more but off the top of my head I'm drawing a blank XD I notice there are two different Full Metal Alchemist animes...um, which one would you recommend? Is one better than the other?

*waves hands frantically*
Oh god Pumpkinhead don't ask that question ever!
It's a controversial topic of argument amongst FMA fans that has raged for a long time and my answer is this - both are very good.
Watch the older one before you watch Brotherhood however, but both are fantastic anime.

I only saw the first one, so I couldn't really tell you Pumpkinhead. XD I'd go with Rogo's suggestion since he knows a bit more than me.

Shows how naive I really am about anime in general if I don't even know about that XD Won't happen again. I started watching episodes from the first series last night and it is fantastic so far :3 Wish I got exposed to this as a kid instead of the mediocre 4kids dubbed animes..........Then again, it might've traumatized me as a kid so never mind.

So outta curiosity, what do you all think is worse: when an anime has no women in the show at all or when it has women in it who are portrayed poorly?

My mom says thanks and you're awesome, Rogo. XD Anyway.
I find it more comical to rant about when there are no women. I can make jokes about how they all went extinct, etc. XD But it gets plain annoying when poor women characters constantly get the spotlight. I mean, when they're in the background, they're more funny than annoying. But when the writer insists on making them the important main character(or close the main character) then it's annoying.
So that's my long answer. XDD

Don't even get me started on the pathetic role of women in anime. They come across as whiney, needy, pushy, nosy, busy-body, desperate, shop-a-holic, airheaded, weak, silly, and bratty...I could go on forever! I love those animes that depict women as strong, kick ass fighters! I can't count the number of animes that I've dropped simply because I found the female character to be too annoying to tolerate.
I guess that's why I tend to gravitate towards females like Villetta Nu from Code Geass, Revi from Black Lagoon, Yuko Ichihara from xxxHOLiC, Fay Valentine from Cowboy Beebop, and a whole host of others. They are very well written female characters. They are strong, yet not overbearing with it, and not above occasionally showing a bit of vulnerability.
But, I have to take under consideration that those female characters that possess all of the annoying characteristics that I mentioned were not designed with real women in mind.

Shall we even get into the whole Tsundere thing?
The thing that means that 90% of strong women must deep down need to be saved by a man and just want him to notice them?
I'm not against strong women having love interests - FMA for example - but Tsundere's do irk me.
Though not as much as the big pile of useless that are Moe characters but that's got it's own topic.

Shall we even get into the whole Tsundere thing? Tsundere/Yandere characters give me migraines! LOL!! Is all of that really necessary? I'm all for love interests as well. I just hate it when the girl sits there and wonders why he doesn't seem to like her. It's like she totally forgot that a few minutes ago, she was hurling a hefty amount of insults and expletives at the guy and then finished off with a whack upside the head with her shoe. But I think what irks me even more are those spineless male characters that take the abuse.

I haven't got a problem with Yandere - those can be entertaining in their sheer madness - but yeah... Tsundere tick me off.
Mostly because most them are only strong to make the male lead look stronger by comparison.
