How about the sneezing thing?
You know if someone's talking about you behind your back you end up sneezing?
That comes up CONSTANTLY in anime and, yeah they have to leave it because it's something that they can't explain every single time it happens.

How can you watch anime and miss that?
What will happen is usually something like this...
Character A: "Character B is such a loser."
(Cut to Character B off somewhere else out of earshot)
Character B: *sneezes* "I think I'm getting a cold."
It's based on this idea that if you sneeze, it may mean that someone is talking about you behind your back.
Go back and watch a lot of anime, most of them bring it up.

Haha, I used the sneezing thing once in my own comic, mostly because ringing in the ears is a little hard to portray in comics! (and I was just starting to become an anime geek at the time... but my exposure to anime is pathetically low compared to most of youse all!)
Reminds me though, of how in Metal Gear Snake Eater the translators said that the phrase 'Kuwabara, kuwabara" didn't have an English equivalent because it's something like a ward or phrase you say during a thunderstorm... mostly a superstitious thing.

"Rain, rain go away, come back again some other day."
You could have used the first part I guess?

Oh THAT. XD Yeah, sorry. I read what you said wrong. LOL I actually think that sneezing is kind of funny more than annoying. But I guess if I watched more anime, it would get repetitive. :/

Haha! Considering the guy who says it, I think "Rain rain go away" would have come off a little too childish  It has something to do with lightning though, because the guy has electric powers. Looking it up, the literal translation for Kuwabara means "Mulberry bush", because in Japanese mythology lightning doesn't strike mulberry bushes! So either way, this big hulking Russian guy with spiked brass knuckles and scary scars all over his face would probably seem a lot less intimidating if he went on saying "Mulberry bush, mulberry bush!" I guess it's one of those rare cases where keeping the word untranslated sort of works in their favor? Kuwabara does sound a lot cooler after all Plus you can kind of infer what he's saying if for since he only says it when it starts raining. I find untranslated words a lot more annoying when it's something that's entirely devoid of any context to attach it to... like something brought up in a casual conversation. |

Okay how do people feel about translating money to make it easier for the audience to relate?
I'm currently watching K-on! and in the dub they use Dollars instead of Yen and I'm unsure of how I feel about it.
How do you feel?

I'm half-half on this. While I prefer to stick with exact translations, I also think its the job of dubs to make anime easier to understand. Most people don't understand how much something is worth in yen. Especially since in Japanese yen, $1.00 is said like $100.00. So you often see characters buying things like ice-cream and paying like 300 yen for it. XD
So I guess, more or less, I am okay with using dollars instead of yen. But really I am unaffected by either situation and wouldn't think much of it if it should ever appear.

Eeeh..I have to say I dislike it when things are switched, especially when it goes one way for half a series then all of a sudden it changes. It is almost like they are saying, oh you should know this by now, it has been in here tons of times. Like in Nurarihyan no Mago where at the end of all the chapters is a summery. It's nice because most good groups that translate for that will leave the original text there for asthetics and have the translation in the summary. But when they are not there I am left wondering what the heck was just said.

Oh when it comes to manga Yen Press are terrible for leaving stuff untranslated. To their credit they do provide a page or two at the end of the each volume to explain some things... but not all.
Also most of the time the page references don't match up.
